Based on the world record nomination from America Records Institute (AMRI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/1000/2023/No.456, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Woni Sports as the "World's first black woman to visit every country" on May 6, 2023.
Spotts was born in 1964 in Los Angeles to Betty (née Mosley) and Roger Spotts. Her mother was a singer, dancer, and pianist and her father was a composer and arranger.

Having travelled with her parents as a child, her wanderlust was originally sparked when family friend and producer Nolan Davis wanted to do a documentary following a young person travelling the globe, and Spotts volunteered. The internet didn't exist at the time, so most of her travel was not documented via social media.
By 1982, she had visited more than 160 countries. During this time she kept detailed records as part of her work on the documentary. She resumed her travels in 2013 and completed them in 2018.

Originally, Spotts wasn't planning to go public about her travels, but when a social media influencer announced her plans to go for the title in 2019, Woni's friends urged her to speak up. According to media studies scholar Tori Omega Arthur, consensus had developed after 2019 that Spotts was the first Black woman to do so.
