At age nine, she was diagnosed with Stargardts Disease, a form of juvenile macular degeneration that causes central vision loss and legal blindness. Marla Runyan was the first blind athlete to compete in the Olympics to win 8th place overall in the 1,500m event at the 2000 Sedney Olympics. On April 26th, 2022, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared ) Marla Runyan as “World’s first legally blind athlete to compete in the Olympic Games”.
