The biggest limitation of many power banks is not their battery capacity but whether they are available when they are needed. They can be left in another bag, at home or connected to a wall outlet. Twelve South designed the PowerClip around that behavioral problem, making portability and accessibility central to the product rather than secondary considerations.

At 45 g, the PowerClip has approximately the footprint of a dental floss container. A zinc-alloy carabiner allows it to attach to a keychain, bag strap or belt loop, effectively incorporating the power bank into items people already carry.

The charging cable follows the same philosophy. Instead of requiring a separate cable, the USB-C cable is built into the PowerClip itself. The connection supports both input and output, while a second port provides pass-through charging. This allows the PowerClip and another device to be charged at the same time. Four LED indicators provide a quick view of the remaining battery level.

Its 2,000mAh capacity is modest compared with larger power banks, but the smaller battery helps keep the device light and compact. Rather than serving as a primary source of portable power, the PowerClip is intended as an emergency charger for situations when a phone needs enough additional energy to make a call, get home or access a boarding pass.

The accessory-oriented design continues through its finishes. The PowerClip is available in five matte colors: Dune, Slate, Mint, Fuchsia and Teal. A limited collaboration with Alpaka also produced a coordinated Micro Tote designed to carry the PowerClip alongside other small everyday essentials.

The result is a power bank built around a specific use case rather than a conventional specification race. Its purpose is not to offer the highest capacity or replace a larger battery pack, but to remain close at hand when a phone’s battery reaches a critical level.

By turning the power bank into something that can be clipped onto an existing part of a daily carry setup, Twelve South addresses a simple but often overlooked aspect of portable charging: a battery that is always with you can be more useful than a larger one that is routinely left behind.
