Toyota portable hydrogen cartridges

12-10-2024

(worldkings.org) Toyota is reshaping how we view energy, moving beyond just automobiles to focus on making hydrogen a widely-used energy source. This October, at Japan Mobility Bizweek, the company introduces portable hydrogen cartridges for the first time.

These cartridges, designed with both practicality and aesthetics in mind, feature a sleek, cylindrical form similar to oversized AA batteries. Their design emphasizes ease of portability and user-friendliness, with ergonomic handles for convenient carrying. Toyota will showcase these cartridges between October 15th and 18th, offering a portable, swappable power solution for next-generation fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

Initially developed by Woven, Toyota’s mobility tech subsidiary, the cartridges have evolved since their first prototype in 2022, now lighter and easier to transport. They can power not only cars but also other devices, offering a glimpse of a future where hydrogen cartridges replace traditional charging infrastructure and refueling stations. These cartridges could also power household appliances, as shown in Toyota’s collaboration with Rinnai Corporation to create a hydrogen-powered stove, transforming energy usage in daily life.

Toyota envisions a hydrogen ecosystem where cartridges can be easily swapped, delivered, and reused, eliminating the need for large-scale hydrogen pipelines. They could harness renewable energy like wind and solar, helping Toyota work toward its goal of achieving net-zero emissions. These portable cartridges could provide power in off-grid areas, during emergencies, or for appliances like portable stoves.

At Japan Mobility Bizweek, Toyota will also present other sustainability initiatives, such as the Liquid Hydrogen-Powered GR Corolla, which has been used in endurance races, and the Sweep Energy Storage System, which repurposes old electric vehicle batteries to stabilize renewable energy sources. As hydrogen gains traction as a viable alternative to electric vehicles, Toyota’s vision for portable hydrogen cartridges offers a real-world solution, potentially powering everything from vehicles to home appliances.
