Delivery robots are increasingly being explored as a way to handle repetitive short-distance trips, but their usefulness is often limited by the final stretch of a journey. The last 100 meters can involve stairs, curbs and irregular surfaces that conventional wheeled robots are not equipped to handle. R-dog is designed specifically around that challenge.

California-based Robot.com has been developing robotic systems since 2017 and already has several platforms in its lineup. These include the smaller R-kiwi for campus food and small-package deliveries, the larger R-cargo for warehouse and industrial logistics, and the humanoid R-noid for household tasks such as cooking and folding laundry.
R-dog introduces a quadruped design to the company's portfolio. The robot has a relatively friendly appearance, including a tail-like feature, but its mobility system is more functional than its playful exterior suggests. Wheels integrated into its feet allow it to travel quickly across smooth, level ground. When it encounters obstacles, its flexible legs can bend at the knees and change position, allowing it to negotiate curbs and stairs.

The cargo compartment effectively forms the robot's main body. It is designed to accommodate multiple packages, including food orders and conventional parcels. Once R-dog reaches a destination, the rear section of the cargo compartment opens and allows the package to slide out. The robot can then continue toward another destination without requiring a person to physically collect the delivery.

One unresolved aspect is how the robot determines which package to release when several deliveries are being carried simultaneously. Robot.com has not yet provided details on that part of the system.
Delivery is also not R-dog's only planned role. Two digital displays are mounted on opposite sides of the robot, allowing it to operate as a mobile advertising platform. Robot.com's R-ads system enables advertisements to be uploaded and managed remotely while also measuring interactions.

The company operates its robotic fleet through REMI, its fleet-management platform. CEO and co-founder Felipe Chavez Cortes says the existing infrastructure allowed the company to add the quadruped platform without developing an entirely new operational system.
R-dog also includes conversational audio, allowing it to respond to people in real time. While interaction is not its primary function, the feature gives the robot an additional way to engage with its surroundings.

Commercial deployment is planned for 2027. Robot.com has not yet disclosed detailed technical specifications for R-dog, leaving questions about its real-world delivery efficiency and autonomous operation.
The concept nevertheless demonstrates an interesting direction for delivery robotics: instead of optimizing only for transportation, R-dog combines mobility, cargo handling, interaction and advertising in a single platform designed to operate where conventional wheeled robots often struggle.
