Rather than relying on sprays or repellents, Photon Matrix's system treats mosquito control as a detection and targeting problem. Sensors continuously scan the surrounding area, identify potential mosquito targets and direct a laser toward them. The commercial version follows a crowdfunding project that attracted significant attention before being developed for broader production and distribution.

The outdoor model uses LiDAR to scan a 90-degree fan-shaped area extending approximately 6 meters. When a mosquito is detected, an internal galvo system rapidly positions the laser and tracks the moving target. Photon Matrix says the system can identify insects as small as 2 mm flying at speeds of up to 1 meter per second.

Millimeter-wave radar and AI vision work alongside the LiDAR system to distinguish mosquitoes from other airborne objects. According to the company, the targeting system is designed to avoid insects such as butterflies while recognizing a broad range of mosquito species.

The accompanying application provides a detailed view of the system's activity. Users can access a mosquito heat map, analysis data, a record of detected targets and a global ranking system modeled after a video game. The app also allows users to adjust the scanning range and angle and create automatic operating schedules.

For outdoor operation away from an electrical outlet, the system uses a 20,000mAh power bank with fast charging. Photon Matrix estimates around four hours of continuous operation when running independently from mains power. An included rotating base can turn through 360 degrees, helping expand the system's effective scanning coverage.

The blue laser also gives the outdoor system a distinctive visual element, although the color is not presented as the primary mechanism behind its targeting capability. Photon Matrix also offers an indoor version that uses infrared detection and a laser invisible to the human eye, making it better suited to enclosed environments.

Both models are described by the manufacturer as extremely quiet, with operating noise reportedly below the level of a whisper. The outdoor Blue Laser Mosquito Air Defense is now available for preorder with worldwide distribution planned, while the company provides a 12-month warranty.

Photon Matrix's approach illustrates how technologies originally associated with robotics and autonomous sensing can be applied to a surprisingly specific household problem. By combining environmental scanning, computer vision and precision targeting, the system attempts to turn mosquito control into an automated detection process rather than a constant battle with sprays and repellents.
