The project traces its origins to the nomadic lifestyle of Bedouin communities, where mobility and adaptability were essential aspects of everyday life. Objects were designed to be lightweight, multifunctional, and easy to transport. One such object was the structural support used in camel saddles, which gradually evolved into a low seating form as communities transitioned from nomadic living to more permanent settlements. Marka builds upon this historical transformation and reinterprets it for modern users.

At its core, Marka is a modular seating system that can be assembled and reconfigured without tools. Through a simple interlocking structure, users can quickly transform the furniture into different arrangements depending on their needs. One configuration creates a shared seating area for two people, encouraging conversation and social interaction. Another transforms the piece into a personal low chair designed for relaxation, reflection, and individual comfort.

The design consists of two structural panels combined with a padded cover, creating a seating experience that is both functional and tactile. A triangular cushion supports multiple sitting positions, allowing users to transition easily between social engagement and personal downtime. This flexibility reflects the project’s broader goal of balancing community connection with individual well-being.

Sustainability is also an important aspect of the design. The structure is manufactured from recycled and recyclable polypropylene sourced from local industrial waste streams. This material choice aligns with contemporary environmental priorities while echoing the resourcefulness traditionally associated with nomadic cultures.

Marka was developed in response to wider social changes linked to urbanization and economic growth. Research conducted during the project highlighted increasing feelings of loneliness and the weakening of community bonds in many rapidly developing cities. Rather than attempting to solve these challenges directly, the furniture creates opportunities for people to gather, converse, and spend time together in shared spaces.

By combining cultural heritage, adaptable functionality, and sustainable materials, Marka demonstrates how contemporary furniture can serve both practical and social purposes.
