The AP100 continuously monitors both its own hardware and the drone in real time, performing automatic self-checks to detect abnormalities as soon as they occur. Even if the Matrice 400 suffers a complete power failure, built-in backup capacitors keep the parachute system operational, ensuring it can still deploy during critical emergencies.

Once activated, the parachute deploys almost instantly and slows the drone's descent to less than 5 meters per second, significantly reducing the impact compared with an uncontrolled crash. After deployment, the system activates audible alarms to warn nearby people while also helping operators locate the aircraft after landing.

DJI offers three independent deployment methods for the AP100. The system can automatically deploy when it detects a malfunction or a geocaging breach, where the drone leaves its designated operating area. Pilots can also manually trigger deployment directly from the DJI Pilot 2 app, while fleet managers have the option to activate it remotely through the FTS page in FlightHub 2, making it suitable for centralized drone operations.

Beyond improving operational safety, the AP100 also supports compliance with regulations governing BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) missions and safety categories such as C5 and C6. These requirements are increasingly important for commercial operations over populated areas, highways, and critical infrastructure, where obtaining flight approval often depends on demonstrating robust risk mitigation.

The hardware is designed for everyday professional use rather than occasional emergencies. Operators can replace drone batteries without removing the parachute system, reducing downtime between missions. The AP100 also carries an IP55 dust and water resistance rating, matching the Matrice 400, and performs automatic startup diagnostics by checking hardware status and communication links before takeoff.

At present, the AP100 is exclusively compatible with the DJI Matrice 400, the company's enterprise platform for industrial inspection, surveying, and public safety missions. Although consumer drones are not supported, DJI's decision to introduce a first-party parachute system suggests that advanced safety features may become a more integral part of its ecosystem as drone operations continue expanding into increasingly complex environments.
