[Worldkings] Top ideas organizations in the world (P. 102) Governor General's Innovation Awards (Canada): The award honoring pioneers shaping Canada's future

(Worldkings.org) Governor General's Innovation Awards recognize and celebrate outstanding Canadian individuals, teams and organizations — trailblazers and creators who contribute to the country’s success, who help shape the future and who inspire the next generation.

Governor General's Innovation Awards (GGIA) are an annual celebration of Canadian innovations that exemplify excellence and have meaningful impacts on their quality of life.

Innovation is one of the primary driving forces behind Canada’s prosperity, standard of living and quality of life. While Canadians are some of the world’s most accomplished innovators, they seldom recognize themselves as such or celebrate their outstanding contributions to the society.

In today’s competitive and interconnected world, increasing productivity through the creation of new products and services, improving public sector performance, and building an inclusive, compassionate society will be the keys to Canada’s success as a caring, efficient and prosperous nation. As innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit are fundamentally important to all Canadians and can have a transformative, positive impact—regardless of whether it is in the private, public or not-for-profit realms—the awards encompass all sectors of Canadian society.

The objectives of the GGIA are to celebrate excellence in innovation across all sectors of Canadian society and inspire Canadians, particularly Canadian youth, to be entrepreneurial innovators.

The Awards are given to individuals, teams and/or organizations whose innovations are:

  • Truly exceptional;
  • Transformative; and,
  • Positive in their impact on quality of life in Canada.

Each year since 2016, up to six award winners are identified through a two-stage, merit-based selection process. The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General and the Rideau Hall Foundation oversee the execution of all aspects of the program.

In addition to being assessed on whether the innovations are truly exceptional and transformative, and are having an active and positive impact on society, nominations are assessed based on the following specific selection criteria:

  • Inspiration – how the process leading to this innovation, its implementation and its developer(s) inspire future innovators in Canada.
  • Leadership – evidence of initiative, collaboration, risk-taking and problem-solving in the process of developing and implementing the innovation.
  • Impact – demonstration of the impact the innovation is having because of its successful implementation in the sector, economy, society or culture.

The awards are not intended for lifetime achievement or innovations that have not yet demonstrated impact. Rather, by recognizing active, current innovators across the breadth of the economy and society the Awards help foster an active culture that celebrates innovation that is having a meaningful impact on Canadian lives.
