(Worldkings.org) Having a robotic vacuum is a wonderful way for many people to get their hands off such chores and clean their homes without devoting as much time and energy to the task.

A robotic vacuum cleaner, sometimes called a robovac or a roomba as a generic trademark, is an autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner which has a limited vacuum floor cleaning system combined with sensors and robotic drives with programmable controllers and cleaning routines.


Early designs included manual operation via remote control and a "self-drive" mode which allowed the machine to clean autonomously. Some designs use spinning brushes to reach tight corners, and some include a number of cleaning features along with the vacuuming feature (mopping, UV sterilization, etc.). More recent models use artificial intelligence and deep learning for better mapping, object identification and event-based cleaning.

The first ever robotic vacuum cleaner appeared in 1996. It was made by Electrolux, Swedish household and professional appliances manufacturer and was called “Trilobite”. Because of its novelty it appeared on BBC's science TV program, Tomorrow's World. It worked fairly well but it had problems with colliding with objects and because it stoped a short distance from walls and other objects it left small areas that are not cleaned. Its production is discontinued. Technology Company Dyson from Britain made their variant known DC06 in 2001 but it was too costly and it never entered mass production.

A year later iRobot, an American advanced technology company, launched the Roomba. This robovac can change direction when it encounters an obstacle, detect dirty spots on the floor, and can detect steep drops, which keeps it from falling down stairs. It became popular very fast and other companies returned to the idea of a robotic vacuum cleaner. Roomba has over 40 models in all price ranges to this day. Neato Robotics made a XV-11 robotic vacuum which uses laser-vision instead of a traditional ultrasound while Dyson Company tries to create robotic vacuums that use a vision system with cameras for navigation.


When owning a robot vacuum cleaner, people will save a lot of time with a robot’s help. Once set up, the robotic vacuum can do almost all the work of cleaning, which frees your hands and can give you more time to do other, more interesting things. It also makes it possible for your home to be cleaned completely and with high efficiency and quality, which lowers the possibility of being exposed to an unhealthy environment.

The robotic vacuum is smarter than you expect. It is able to sense the changes in the surface underneath and adjust accordingly. No matter whether the floor is hardwood or carpet, the robot can handle the cleaning task perfectly. Not only that, with sensors and a protective buffer, it can not only prevent itself from being damaged but also can avoid damaging the furniture. Some advanced robots, can even generate a real-time map and plan a route that allows for more efficient and complete cleaning.


Compared to traditional vacuums, robotic vacuums are much quieter. Noise can be a real nuisance and definitely affects your comfort. Basically, these robots have the ability to regulate the noise produced.
