(Worldkings.org) Roland Siegwart is a Swiss engineer, scholar, and researcher who has made significant contributions to the field of robotics and self-driving systems.

Roland Siegwart (1959) is full Professor of Autonomous Systems at ETH Zurich since July 2006 and Founding Co-​Director of the Wyss Zurich. From January 2010 to December 2014, he took office as Vice President Research and Corporate Relations in the ETH Executive Board. He is member of the board of directors of various companies, including Komax and NZZ. He received his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in 1983 and his Doctoral Degree in 1989 from ETH Zurich. He brought up a spin-​off company, spent ten years as professor at EPFL Lausanne (1996 – 2006) and held visiting positions at Stanford University and NASA Ames.


Siegwart's interest in robotics began early in his career, when he worked on developing control systems for industrial robots. He quickly realized the potential of robots to perform tasks that were too dangerous or difficult for humans, and became passionate about developing robots that could operate autonomously in challenging environments.

Siegwart's research activities focus on mobile robot design and navigation – localization and mapping, planning in dynamic environments, human–robot interaction, locomotion concepts for rough terrain, mobile micro-robots, space rovers, autonomous cars, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

One of his notable achievements is the development of the "RoboBees" project, which aimed to create a swarm of tiny flying robots that could perform pollination, environmental monitoring, and search and rescue operations. This project was inspired by the behavior of bees and other social insects, and required a high level of creativity in designing and implementing the robots.

Siegwart has also worked on developing autonomous ground vehicles, such as the "Autonomous Racing Car" project, which aimed to create a self-driving car that could compete in a race against human drivers. In 2007, he and his team developed the autonomous car "Spirit" in collaboration with major automobile manufacturers. This project was a significant step towards the development of self-driving cars.
