[Worldkings] Top 50 creative minds in the world (P. 09) Jony Ive (UK): Legendary designer behind iconic Apple products

(Worldkings.org) Jony Ive helped create one of the most powerful and recognizable brands in the world, Apple. Jonathan lived most of his life in London, then moved to the United States to work for Apple in 1992.

Jonathan Paul Ive, better known as Jony Ive (born February 27, 1967), is a British industrial and product designer, as well as businessman. Ive was the chief design officer (CDO) of Apple Inc. from 1997 until 2019 (known as senior vice president of industrial design until 2015), and serves as Chancellor of the Royal College of Art.

His collaboration with Steve Jobs produced some of the world’s most iconic product designs, including the iMac, Apple TV, Mac Book Air, Powerbook G4, iPhone, iPod, and more. Ive played a huge role in helping reverse a long decline and bringing the company back from the brink of bankruptcy.

He was with the company from 1992 and served as an integral part of making the company into the global powerhouse it is today. He was also responsible for the iOS 7 design, which greatly influenced the design world as we know it, leading to more flat, simplistic designs.

Ive was also naturally inspired by his father, Mike Ive, who helped create a mandatory design and technology curriculum for schools throughout the UK. His work and teachings have helped shape renowned British designers for years.

In a world of monotone computers, Ive brought color and transparency to the materials used to create eye-catching products. He was the one who pushed Apple to make their products white because most of the things he produced at his British design school were white. To create a successful product, he combined a simplistic, minimal design with aesthetically pleasing elements that set it apart from competing products.

Ive has received accolades and honours for his designs and patents. In the United Kingdom, he has been appointed a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI), an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (HonFREng), and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE). In 2018, he was awarded the Professor Hawking Fellowship of the Cambridge Union Society. In a 2004 BBC poll of cultural writers, Ive was ranked the most influential person in British culture. His designs have been described as integral to the successes of Apple, which has gone on to become the world's largest information technology company by revenue and the largest company in the world by market capitalization.

On 27 June 2019, in an interview with the Financial Times, Ive announced he would leave Apple after 27 years to start his own design firm, LoveFrom, together with industrial designer Marc Newson. He was recruited by the Agnelli family to work on Ferrari vehicles, starting in 2021.
