First Round, an event by UnderConsideration launched in 2018, is a one-day showcase of original presentations made to clients showing initial design explorations for logo, identity, and branding projects.

At First Round, speakers — local to the city where each event is held — share their first-round presentation process by showing the original PDF/Keynote/PPT file that they presented to a client the very first time they saw a range of design explorations (or a single design exploration).

The goal of the event is to provide attendees with ideas, techniques, and confidence to improve their own presentation skills so that more of us can make the best work possible for our clients as well as highlighting that design is a process and that few projects come out fully developed in the first round — this is a unique opportunity to learn how to present your work and get your best work implemented.

A bonus benefit that has surfaced is how many designers share the strategy and research that usually precedes the first round of design explorations providing additional insight into how different designers kickstart the design process. The reception to First Round by both attendees and speakers has been overwhelmingly positive and it is able to provide this rare glimpse of so many designers’ process and thinking.
