Founded in Taiwan in 1967, Fo Guang Shan is not just only a Buddhism School but also one of the biggest Social and Charity Organizations in Taiwan. Besides, it built most pagodas and universities in the world. Until now, Fo Guang Shan has their own branches in 173 countries in the world, include the Western countries as well as in the countries that the effect of Buddhism is still small such as Philippines. The number of the pagoda that built by the sub-organizations of the Fo Guang Shan has been risen to 3500 locations.

This is proved through the number of the university built or contributed to build by the Fo Guang Shan: 4 Buddhism universities, 3 normal universities and several comunity colleges. The ones accepted to learn in the universities built by Fo Guang Shan will be free of school fees and delivered the free accomodation during the learning duration. Moreover, Fo Guang Shan also manage some schools and kindergardens in Taiwan.
