The Temple is about 42 meters in height, include 12 floors. The length of each side in the root of the temple is about 123 meters. The foundation of the temple is a square which is about 123 meters for each edge. On this foundation are other six square floors with the edge for each floor are 120, 89, 69, 61, 54, and 58 meters in turn, represent for the huge ground on the earth.
The 3 left floors are circular which has diameter about 51, 38 and 26 meters in turn. On this 3 floors, there are about 602 statues of Buddha but some were stolen in the past, thus now there are only 504 statues left, some of them just only have the body of the statues.

The origin of the Borobudur Temple is still mysterious until today, some scholars cite that it come from The Ancient Buddhist Cambodia. This is at the beginning of the 8th Century, when the Sanjaya Regime following Hindu, worship Shiva and set up the Capital at the Northern Centre of Java Island.
A Cambodian Prince was protected by this regime, but then he come back to Cambodia in 802 and crowned him king. Perhaps he also brought the first project of the Borobudur due to the similarity between a small temple found in Cambodia and the Borobudur.
Year 850 can be considered as the year when the building of Borobudur Temple was completed. However, in the beginning of the XIII Century, the Arabian Merchants brought the Muslim into Indonesia. Within 200 years, all of the Indonesia Islands were “Islamized” and thus, Borobudur, a wonder of Buddhist became abandoned.
Just after the end of WW2 (1945) Indonesian Government realized the importance of the Borobudur, thus they invited the archaeologists around the world to come to do the research and call for the help from UNESCO. An emergency program was carried out in 1948 to help the Borobudur to escape from the abandoned situation and another larger program was carried out from 1973 to 1982 to restore the temple to “almost perfect situation”, this program at that time cost about 17 million of dollar.
