Greatest road trips in the world (P.14) Icefields Parkway: Scenic road of Canada

( The Icefields Parkway is a beautiful stretch of road. There are a ton of amazing places to visit along the Icefields Parkway, which makes it difficult to choose which ones to check out and which ones to miss if you’re short on time.

The Icefields Parkway is one of the most scenic drives in the entire world. This 230-kilometer-long stretch of highway winds its way through both Banff National Park and Jasper National Park connecting Lake Louise with Jasper – two of the best places to visit in Alberta.

The first stop on your Icefields Parkway itinerary is Jasper Skytram. Ride the Jasper SkyTram and ascend to the peak of Whistlers Mountain. As your tram touches down at an elevation of 2,227 meters, prepare to gain a whole new perspective on the Canadian Rockies.

The Valley of The 5 Lakes is not far from the first stop. An epic day hiking option, The Valley of the Five Lakes hike offers clear lakes with stunning shades of jade and blue. There are some short walking trails and more viewpoints that during calm weather, offer mirror-reflection photography opportunities.

Along the Icefields Parkway, there are a series of powerful and picturesque waterfalls. They are stunning from any angle and great places to stop for lunch, or even a rustic overnight stay. Some of the popular are Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls, Tangle Falls, etc.

Jasper Glacier Skywalk is an adrenaline pumper in Icefields Parkway. Get your experience of beauty beyond imagination from this glass-floored observation platform 280 meters above the Sunwapta Valley in Jasper National Park. A breathtaking way to appreciate the Canadian Rockies, The Glacier Skywalk is a must-stop on any adventurer’s itinerary.

Mark your entry into Banff National Park by taking a short five-minute walk from a roadside pullout to the scenic Mistaya Canyon. This steep-walled canyon has been carved through thousands of years of erosion and is now home to thundering waters in the gorge below. Summit at a high point along the Icefields Parkway, Peyto Lake is set far below in a deep glacial valley. This view is easy to reach along a paved trail.

There are some café and souvenir shops, and local warm accommodation options on the road for you to take some rest and a coffee while enjoying the landscape. And in fact, there is only one gas station on the Icefields Parkway, the Saskatchewan River Crossing. So plan ahead with a full fuel tank and food.
