14-05-2015

(Worldkings) - At an altitude of 8,848 m (29,029 ft), Mt. Everest (Himalaya range) has the highest mountain top in the world.

Mt. Everest is located on the international border between China and Nepal. This mountain and its height were first mentioned in a publication of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1856, in which Mt. Everest height was established at 8,840 m (29,002 ft).

99 years later, another survey by Indian government established Mt. Everest's height at 8,848 m (29,029 ft). This became the current official height after being recognized by both China and Nepal.
The mountain official English name, Everest, is a name given by the Royal Geographical Society. They named it after Sir George Everest, the Surveyor General of India from 1830 through 1843. There are also local names, such as Chomolungma (in Tibet) and Sagarmatha (in Nepal).
As the highest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest attracts a lot of brave and adventurous mountaineers every year. Unfortunately, not all of them could conquer the highest mountain top successfully. According to Earth Observatory (a unit of NASA), by March 2012, Everest has been climbed 5,656 times with 223 deaths. It is, as someone said, "dream has never come true."
