‘Captain America: Civil War’ is the highest-grossing movie of 2016

(Worldkings) Captain America is truly the Captain of America… and the rest of the world. His third solo movie is officially the highest-grossing film of the year, so far.

As of Wednesday Captain America: Civil War has made $981.9 million worldwide, overcoming another Disney-owned hit Zootopia, which has made $971 million.

Domestically Civil War still has a ways to go until it becomes #1, but that mission seems highly likely to be a success. The Jungle Book is currently in fourth place domestically with $314 million, followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with $328 million, Zootopiawith $332 million, and Deadpool topping the list at $362 million.

Cap has made $306 million in the U.S., meaning he needs to make about $60 million more before he is ruler of the 2016 domestic box office. That’ll be an easy battle for Steve Rogers in the weeks ahead.

Civil War is expected to do very well at this weekend’s box office thanks to no major new releases opening besides Neighbors 2: Sorority RisingNext weekend will be more of a challenge, however, because X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass open on May 27.

It’ll be interesting to see if the movie can hold the number one spot for the rest of the year. Cap’s biggest competition could be the new Harry Potter and Star Wars spinoffs coming at the end of this year, Fantastic Beasts and Rogue One respectively. Highly-anticipated sequels coming out this summer like Finding Dory and Independence Day: Resurgence may also interfere with Cap’s climb.
