Dolmio is the brand name of a range of pasta sauces made by Mars, Incorporated. The range includes jars of sauces and ready-meal style packets and stir-ins. The company is marketed in television commercials and other media by puppets, known as "The Dolmio Puppets", who also feature on the packaging.
Dolmio pasta sauce in Australia was originally named Alora by Anna Ciccone and marketed by Masterfoods (and Mars), starting with a test launch of Alora Spaghetti Bolognese sauce in a 500g resealable glass jar 1985.
The same year, Alora began a small test launch in the Grampians region of Scotland. Following its success, Alora was renamed Dolmio and rolled out across the UK in 1986, and subsequently renamed Dolmio globally in 1989.
The Dolmio products pack loads of tomatoes into them, which means the company’s products contain the sugar in the tomatoes. Tomatoes contain sugar naturally. In fact, consumer gets sugar from any kind of fruit or vegetable – it’s a natural energy source for plants. A whole large tomato weighing 184 grams contains more than 4.75g of sugar. An average medium-sized 120g tomato has 3.25g of sugar, whilst a 57g plum tomato provides only 1.6g of sugar.
According to Statista, Dolmio was the best-selling pasta sauces brand in Great Britain, an estimated over 8 million consumers in 2019.
