The company was created in Madrid in 1924 as Compañía Telefónica Nacional de España (CTNE) with ITT as one of its major shareholders. It provides fixed and mobile telephony, broadband, and subscription television, operating in Europe and the Americas.

Telefónica took its current name in 1988. By the beginning of the 21st century, it had a significant presence in about 20 countries. Much of the company's growth took place in Latin America.
Telefónica is the primary service provider in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking markets. The company offers a wide range of services, including landline and mobile, Internet and broadband, content management, directory, applications, and customer relationship management.

In Spain, Telefónica is the second largest corporation after Santander Group. It operates under the Movistar and O2 brands, and is known to be the first company to offer the largest broadband and telephones (both mobile and landline) in Spain.
As demand and profits in the telecom sector shrank following the dot-com boom in the late 1990s, Telefónica entered into a series of acquisitions and joint ventures in the early 21st century.
