[WorldKings - Wowtimes – World Almanac & Achievements 2023] Achievements in 84 years of Greggs development, the UK's leading bakery chain (1939)

10-02-2023

(worldkings) Eighty years ago, John Gregg started out with one goal, to deliver (by pushbike) fresh eggs and yeast to the families of Newcastle. Ten years later he chained up his bike and opened Greggs of Gosforth. Making, baking and selling fresh bread and tasty treats from his very own shop on Gosforth High Street…there’s still a Greggs there today.

Greggs plc is a British bakery chain. It specialises in savoury products such as bakes, sausage rolls, sandwiches and sweet items including doughnuts and vanilla slices. It is headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Originally a high street chain, it has since entered the convenience and drive-thru markets, this achieved mainly through its partnership with EG Group.

The company’s milestones:

1939 - Greggs is established as a door-to-door bakery round. It sells bakery products to many of the mining terraces in Newcastle and surrounding areas.

1951 – Greggs opened its first shop in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.

1967 - The first recorded 'pie n peas' supper event for older residents in Gateshead (pictured above). Greggs begins to develop a reputation as a company with the community at its heart.

1983 - The first ever Greggs sponsored Childrens Cancer Run at Gosforth Racecourse, which to date has raised over £5million to support Children's Cancer Research

1999 - The Greggs Foundation was founded. It is  a registered charity closely associated with Greggs plc, recently celebrated a major milestone for its Breakfast Club Programme which ensures more than 15,000 schoolchildren across the UK have a nutritious breakfast each day.

2003 - Collection boxes are introduced to all shops to raise money to support local charities. Divisional Charity Committees are established to distribute funds. Over time, this becomes the Regional Grants programme, which is still available today.

2008 - Greggs rebranded its 165 Bakers Oven shops as Greggs so they could benefit from its national advertising campaign.

September 2011 - Greggs opened its first Greggs Moment, a 104-seater coffee shop, in its home town of Newcastle on Northumberland Street.

2013 - Greggs began to transition out of the bakery market, reasoning that it couldn't compete with supermarkets on that front. Instead, the company switched to focusing solely on "food on the go" after discovering that 80% of its business was in that market.

2016 - Greggs moved their head office from Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne to Quorum Business Park, Longbenton, North Tyneside.

2017 - Greggs opened their first Drive-through, at Irlam Gateway Service Station in Salford.

2019 - Greggs launched a vegan sausage roll in January 2019, made with vegan Quorn.

2022 - Greggs opened its largest location in a Primark store in Birmingham. A collaborative clothing range, "Greggs X Primark", was also released.
