Safran S.A. is a French multinational company that designs, develops and manufactures aircraft engines, rocket engines as well as various aerospace and defense-related equipment or their components. It was formed by a merger between SNECMA and the defense electronics specialist SAGEM in 2005. The company is listed on the Euronext stock exchange and is part of the CAC 40 and Euro Stoxx 50. Its headquarters are located in Paris.


Safran supplies aerospace and defense systems and equipment. The Company sells engines for airplanes and helicopter, launch vehicles, landing and braking systems, nacelles, onboard electrical systems, optronics, avionics, launcher propulsion, biometric equipment, explosives detection, and trace analysis systems. Safran serves aviation and defense industries worldwide.


The company’s milestones:

1915: Gnome et Rhône was founded in 1915, then nationalized in 1945 to become the Société Nationale d'Etude et de Construction de Moteurs d'Aviation (Snecma). It is dedicated to the production of aircraft engines.

1925: Founded in 1925, Société d'applications general d'electricite et de Mechanical (Sagem) is a French company with a wide range of activities, from defense to remote printers to aviation equipment such as inertial devices.

2005: Safran is created by the merger of Snecma and Sagem. The group specializes in aerospace, defense and security.


2014: Safran and Airbus create a 50/50 joint venture, named Airbus Safran Launchers, a joint venture in space rocket launch to compete with America's SpaceX.

2015: Inauguration of Safran Tech, the Group Research & Technology center, located in the Paris suburb of Saclay.

2016: all companies in the group gather under a single logo and adopt the Safran brand.

January 2017: Safran initiated a takeover of the aircraft interior supplier Zodiac Aerospace to create the third largest aerospace supplier with $22.5 billion revenue, behind United Technologies with $28.2 billion and GE Aviation with $24.7 billion.

2018: Safran took control of Zodiac Aerospace, significantly expanding its aircraft equipment activities. The Group created 4 new companies, specialized in aerosystems and aircraft interiors.


June 4, 2018: Boeing and Safran announced their 50-50 partnership to design, build and service Auxiliary Power Units.

2019: Safran has more than 95,000 employees and generates 24.64 billion euros in sales.
