Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd (ZGH), commonly known as Geely, is a Chinese multinational automotive company headquartered in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. The company is privately held by Chinese billionaire business magnate Li Shufu. Geely Auto is currently the seventh largest automobile manufacturer in China, with 1.328 million sales in China in 2021. Globally, the group sold over 2.2 million cars in 2021 and over 17,926 plug-in electric vehicles in January 2022.

The company produces and sells vehicles under its own brandings - such as Geely Auto, Geometry, Maple, and Zeekr - and under foreign-located subsidiaries - such as Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lynk & Co, Proton, and Lotus - as well as commercial-only vehicles under the London EV Company, Ouling Auto and Farizon Auto brands.

It also produces electric vehicles under some of the previously listed brandings, and motorcycles under its subsidiary Zhejiang Geely Ming Industrial (Jiming and Geely brands), Qianjiang Motorcycle (QJMotor and Keeway brands), and Benelli. The group also acquired in September 2022 a 7.6% shareholding of Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings plc, the ultra-luxury British performance brand Aston Martin.

  • 1986: Li Shufu founded Geely as a refrigerator maker with money borrowed from his family.
  • 1997: Geely Auto entered the automobile industry with the vision of producing cars that ordinary people can afford, becoming China’s first privately-owned auto manufacturer. Products that were produced during this early period are known as 1st generation products.
  • 1998: The first Geely Auto car (Haoqing) rolled off the assembly line in Linhai, Zhejiang.
  • 2001: Geely Auto became the first privately-owned auto manufacturer officially listed on China’s automobile manufacturer index.
  • 2003: The first batch of Geely Auto cars was exported to overseas markets.
  • 2005: Geely Auto (0175 HK) officially listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Geely Auto had a debut appearance at the 61st Frankfurt Auto Show, a first for privately-owned Chinese brands.
  • 2006: Geely Auto establish a joint venture with Manganese Bronze Holdings to produce the iconic London taxi in Shanghai.
  • 2008: Geely Auto’s 2.0-era compact car “Panda” received a 5-star safety rating from C-NCAP.
  • 2009: Geely acquired DSI, the world’s second-largest maker of automatic transmissions. Geely Auto’s 2nd generation A-segment car, EC7 rolled off the line in Ningbo. It became the best-selling Chinese sedan with over 1 million units sold.
  • 2010: Geely acquired Volvo Cars and became the first Chinese multinational automotive group.
  • 2015: Zhejiang Geely Holding Group’s London Taxi new factory opening ceremony was held in Coventry, UK. Geely’s Emgrand GT was named the 2016 “China Car of the Year”, becoming the first Chinese brand to win the coveted award.
  • 2018: Geely Auto was ranked 18th in Brand Finance’s 2018 report on the world’s most valuable automobile, auto component, and tire brands.
  • 2019: Geely Auto Group launched its first pure electric brand Geometry and its first model Geometry A was launched in Singapore.
  • 2020: Geely started talks with rival car manufacturers, including Daimler AG, to license a new architecture it developed for building electric cars. The new technology offers increased driving ranges of up to 700 km and lighter cars.
  • 2021: Geely started a strategic partnership with Renault by forming a car production joint venture for China.
