In the early 21st century, Burger King claimed to have about 14,000 stores in nearly 100 countries. Headquarters are in Miami, Florida.

Burger King (BK) is an American-based multinational chain of hamburger fast food restaurants. Headquartered in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Burger King's menu has expanded from a basic offering of burgers, French fries, sodas, and milkshakes to a larger and more diverse set of products.

As of December 31, 2018, Burger King reported that it had 17,796 outlets in 100 countries. Of these, nearly half are located in the United States, and 99.7% are privately owned and operated, with its new owners moving to an almost entirely franchised model in 2013. Burger King has historically used several variations of franchising to expand its operations.

 

 

The company’s milestones:

In 1953 - The predecessor to Burger King was founded in 1953 in Jacksonville, Florida, as Insta-Burger King by Keith J. Kramer and his wife's uncle Matthew Burns.

In 1955 - Frank Bates founded Whopper Burger in San Antonio, Texas.

In 1956 - Burger King Drive Inn was a mini-chain of restaurants founded in 1956 in Alberta, Canada.

In 1957 - The Whopper sandwich was the creation of David Edgerton & James McLamore in 1957.

In 1958 - First advertising of “Burger King: Home of the Whopper” on television.

By 1959 - The Insta-Burger chain had grown, but the Kramer-Burns operation had run into financial trouble, and McLamore and Edgerton bought out the entire company to restructure and revitalize its operations.

By 1961 - The rechristened Burger King and its signature burger, the Whopper, had begun to spread across the United States.

In 1963 - The company expanded ouside the United States in 1963 with a store in Puerto Rico.

 

 

In 1967 - The Pillsbury Company bought Burger King Corporation for $18 million, and with the baking company's capital behind it.

In 1971 - When Burger King established itself down under, they learned that their name had already been trademarked.

By the late 1970s - Burger King was able to grow to become America's second-largest burger chain, just behind McDonald's.

In 1982 – Buger King introduce bacon double cheeseburger. Late-night drive-thru service becomes available.

In 1985 – Breakfast debuts nationally with the Croissan’wich as the key products.

In 1990 – BKC introduced BK Broiler chicken sandwich.

In 1993 - Burger King launches the Value Meal.

 

 

In 1994 – Buger King teams with Disney for the Blockbusetr hit the Lion King. More than 7,600 restaurants are in operation in 56 countries worldwide.

In 2004 – Buger King launches Have it Your Way low-carb line featuring the bunless Whopper and bunless Chicken Whopper.

In 2010 - With the opening of its Whopper Bar locations in the United States during 2010, Burger King reported that it would be the first time in its North American locations that beer would be available for purchase.

In 2011 - The majority of Burger King restaurants, approximately 90%, were privately held franchises.

 

 

At the end of 2014 - Burger King ranked fourth among US food chains in terms of US sales, behind McDonald's, Starbucks, and Subway.[91] Burger King now has over 12,000 stores worldwide.

In 2019 - Burger King released an "Impossible Whopper" burger, a vegetarian burger using a plant-based patty from Impossible Foods.
