The company is especially known for its enterprise resource planning (ERP) software. SAP is the largest non-American software company by revenue, the world's third-largest publicly-traded software company by revenue, and the largest German company by market capitalization.

SAP focuses on 25 industries and six industry sectors: process industries, discrete industries, consumer industries, service industries, financial services and public services. It offers integrated product sets for large enterprises, mid-sized companies and small businesses.

  • 1972: SAP was launched in 1972 by five former IBM workers with a vision of developing standard application software
  • 1973: SAP finishes its first accounting system - RF. This system functions as the foundation from the creation of applications modules.
  • 1974: Converted its RF system from the DOS operating system to OS.
  • 1975: Businesses can handle their buying, inventory management, and invoice confirmation with SAP's RM platform.
  • 1978: SAP finishes the Module Asset Accounting and similar project job at a pilot firm.

  • 1979: Operations began by SAP for the very first time on its own server, Siemens 7738.
  • 1980: SAP moves into its first facility on Max-Planck-Strasse in the Walldorf industrial park.
  • 1981: SAP creates its first event appearance at the IT trade-show Systems at Munich, Germany.
  • 1982: SAP celebrates 10 years in business, and now more than 250 businesses in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland utilize SAP Software.
  • 1986: SAP opens its first international subsidiary in Austria. Additionally, it reinforces its existence in western Germany's Rhine-Ruhr region, starting its first branch office at Ratingen (close Düsseldorf).
  • 1987: SAP breaks ground on its new training center in the Walldorf industrial area.
  • 1988: SAP transforms out of the Private Company into the SAP AG. From DM 5 million, the business increases its capital stock in just two increments to DM 60 million.
  • 1989: SAP introduces its new, more user-friendly interface for SAP R/2.
  • 1991: SAP presents the first applications in its SAP R/3 system at CeBIT in Hanover, where the response is highly positive.
  • 1993: SAP starts working with the world's biggest software manufacturer, Microsoft, to port SAP R/3 to the Windows NT operating system.

  • 1997: SAP celebrates its 25 years in Mannheim. German Chancellor Dr. Helmut Kohl is one of the guests at the parties.
  • 2001: Top-tier's founder, Shai Agassi, takes over the management of this business area and is appointed to the SAP Executive Board one year later.
  • 2002: Thirty years after its foundation, SAP is the third-largest independent software provider in the world.
  • 2004: SAP brings the first version of SAP NetWeaver to market.
  • 2005: A research conducted on behalf of the business magazine Capital titles SAP Germany "Best employer of 2005" among other companies with 5,000 employees or longer.
  • 2006: Along with SAP Germany, SAP Austria, SAP Chile, SAP Andina y del Caribe, SAP Mexico, and SAP Region Sur win the "Great Place to Work" award from the Institute of the same name.
  • 2007: The Company buys Pilot Software – a private California provider of strategy management software – as well as Yusa, OutlookSoft, Wicom, and MaXware. SAP also announces its intention to purchase Business Objects, a company specializing in business intelligence applications.
  • 2008: After purchasing the French provider of business intelligence solutions the portfolio of SAP also enlarges which makes it the industry leader in enterprise management applications and company intelligence.
  • 2011: Clients Implement the SAP HANA platform, the very first in-memory product.

  • 2014: SAP completes the acquisition of Concur, the largest software-as-a-service acquisition in history, adding the US$1.2 trillion industry travel market to the reach of SAP's leadership status in the industry network.
  • 2015: Creation of enterprise applications with a fresh small business package, SAP S/4HANA. A platform that was on the SAP HANA advanced in-memory platform to crack through all or any limitations of this past.
  • 2016: Apple® and SAP announced a partnership to combine powerful native apps for iPhone® and iPad® with the cutting-edge capabilities of the SAP HANA platform.
  • 2017: Google and SAP announce a partnership to make SAP HANA available on Google’s public cloud platform for the first time. With this particular venture SAP, HANA becomes accessible on the three Programs: Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and also Google Cloud Platform.
