(worldkings.org) Tesco PLC is a British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer headquartered in Welwyn Garden City, England.

Tesco has expanded globally since the early 1990s, with operations in 11 other countries in the world. The company pulled out of the US in 2013, but as of 2018 continues to see growth elsewhere. Since the 1960s, Tesco has diversified into areas such as the retailing of books, clothing, electronics, furniture, toys, petrol, software, financial services, telecoms and internet services. In the 1990s Tesco repositioned itself from being a downmarket high-volume low-cost retailer, attempting to attract a range of social groups with its low-cost "Tesco Value" range and premium "Tesco Finest" range.

Tesco is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

  • 1919: Jack Cohen founded Tesco in 1919 when he began to sell war-surplus groceries from a stall at Well Street Market
  • 1924: The first own-brand product sold, which Jack promised would bring unequalled value, was Tesco Tea - before the company was called Tesco.
  • 1929: The first Tesco store was opened
  • 1947: Tesco was floated on the London Stock Exchange
  • 1956: First self-service shop opened in St Albans and the first supermarket in Maldon
  • 1968: The term 'Superstore' was first used when we opened our store in Crawley, West Sussex. It was 40,000 sq. ft. in size and sold food and non-food goods.
  • 1973: The company moved into fuel by introducing petrol stations at major sites.
  • 1977: A major price-cutting initiative called ‘Checkout at Tesco’ was introduced. It improved on the value offer to customers as we concentrated on lower prices.
  • 1992: The first Tesco Metro opened in Covent Garden.
  • 1995: Tesco expanded into Central Europe with stores opening in Hungary. Within a decade they would open stores in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Ireland, Thailand and Malaysia, and enter India. Tesco Clubcard was launched and attracted nearly five million customers in the first year.

  • 2000: Tesco goes online. Tesco.com was launched. The website has grown to serve over 20,000,000 customers visiting the site every month.
  • 2002: Tesco bought the UK's second largest convenience store chain, One Stop.
  • 2004: The company has expanded its line of production from specializing in selling groceries by also stocking consumer goods, financial services and Telecoms
  • 2013: Tesco launched its first tablet computer, a seven-inch model called Hudl
  • 2018: Wholesaler Booker Group merges with Tesco. The two companies bring together retail and wholesale expertise to create the UK’s leading food business.
