[WorldKings – World Almanac Event 2024] 29 Million-Year-Old Grasshopper Nest Fossil Found in Oregon

18-01-2024

(Worldkings.org) A nearly intact grasshopper nest has been discovered in Oregon, USA, opening a new door for research into the reproduction of this insect species from the Oligocene epoch (from 33.9 million to 23 million years ago). This nest, containing about 50 eggs, has been fossilized into a rock, retaining almost its original shape and structure.

Recent studies suggest that this nest may have been created by a species of grasshopper. The structure of the nest and the shape of the eggs are very similar to modern grasshopper species. Insect egg fossils are rare in the fossil record, and intact nests are even rarer. This may be the only recorded fossil grasshopper nest in the world and indicates that grasshopper species were thriving in this area, and some grasshopper species buried their eggs underground.

This fossil is even more special because it was found in an environment usually not conducive to fossilization, according to Dr. Nick Famoso, the program manager for paleontology and museum manager at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. However, the conditions around this nest were just right for it to be buried and fossilized without being disturbed in perfect conditions, despite the presence of a nearby water flow environment.
