[WORLDKINGS] On this day - September 4, 2023 – The 25th anniversary of Google founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin (1998)

(Worldkings.org) Google was founded on September 4, 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two PhD students at Stanford University in California.

Google was officially launched in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to market Google Search, which has become the most used web-based search engine. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, students at Stanford University in California, developed a search algorithm at first known as "BackRub" in 1996, with the help of Scott Hassan and Alan Steremberg.

Originally the search engine used Stanford's website with the domains google.stanford.edu and z.stanford.edu. The domain google.com was registered on September 15, 1997. They formally incorporated their company, Google, on September 4, 1998 in their friend Susan Wojcicki's garage in Menlo Park, California. Wojcicki eventually became an executive at Google and CEO at YouTube.

Google quickly grew in popularity and became the dominant search engine on the internet. The company has since rapidly grown to offer a multitude of products and services beyond Google Search, many of which hold dominant market positions, including: Gmail, Chrome, Google Drive, Google Translate, etc. Google's other ventures outside of Internet services and consumer electronics include quantum computing (Sycamore), self-driving cars (Waymo, formerly the Google Self-Driving Car Project), smart cities (Sidewalk Labs), and transformer models (Google Brain).

Today, Google is a multinational technology company with operations all over the world. It has been referred to as "the most powerful company in the world" and as one of the world's most valuable brands due to its market dominance, data collection, and technological advantages in the field of artificial intelligence.
