The audience, the largest in television history at the time, was treated to performances from 19 different nations via four satellites: Intelsat I (aka "Early Bird," see photo), Intelsat 2-2 ("Lani Bird"), Intelsat 2-3 ("Canary Bird"), and NASA's ATS-1.

Through “Our World,” the two and a half hour long production, talent was showcased including opera singer Maria Callas, painter Pablo Picasso, and The Beatles, who closed the show with their new song “All You Need Is Love,” said to be composed for the event. The Beatles had been commissioned by the BBC, which originally started the production effort, to write a song for the United Kingdom's contribution that contained a simple message to be understood by all nationalities.

Various education and current event segments also appeared in the broadcast, including a spot on tracking a deep space object, a discussion on the impact of the new television technology on a global scale, and a look at the Saturn V rocket and Apollo spacecraft being worked on at Cape Kennedy.

The program took 10 months to pull together and was transmitted to 31 countries. No videotape or film was used for the live broadcast, and it took 10,000 technicians, producers, and interpreters to put on the TV special.
