[WORLDKINGS] On this day - July 30, 2023 – 151st anniversary of Mahlon Loomis' patenting for wireless telegraph (1872)

(Worldkings.org) Mahlon Loomis' pioneering work in wireless communications laid the foundation for later developments in radio technology.

Mahlon Loomis ((21 tháng 7 năm 1826 – 13 tháng 10 năm 1886) was an American dentist and inventor who is best known for his work in the field of wireless telegraphy. In the 1860s, Loomis conducted a series of experiments in which he attempted to send telegraph signals through the atmosphere without the use of wires.

Loomis believed that the Earth's atmosphere could conduct electrical currents, and he tested this theory by using kites equipped with copper wires and sending signals between them. He also experimented with the use of balloons and other airborne objects to transmit wireless signals.

On July 30, 1872, he was issued U.S. Patent 129,971 for "Improvement in Telegraphing". Although Loomis was able to demonstrate that wireless telegraphy was possible, his experiments were not widely recognized at the time. It was not until later, when other inventors such as Guglielmo Marconi and Nikola Tesla made significant advances in the field, that wireless telegraphy became a practical technology.

Despite the lack of recognition during his lifetime, Loomis is now recognized as a pioneer in the development of wireless communication. He was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2012.
