(worldkings.org - worldmark.world) Tucked away in the vibrant heart of the city, Bến Thành Market stands as an enduring emblem of Saigon. Far more than just a marketplace, it has served for nearly a century as a living chronicle of the city’s dynamic history. This bustling hub not only mirrors the economic vitality of the nation’s premier commercial center but also bridges the cultural divide between the Saigon of old and the modern metropolis it has become.

The history of Bến Thành Market is closely entwined with the fortunes of the Saigon – Chợ Lớn metropolitan area. Initiated in 1912, the market has undergone multiple renovations and relocations, evolving into its present form and prominence. Through these transformations, it has not only adapted to the changing urban landscape but also cemented its status as a pivotal landmark in the city.

Originally perched along the banks of the Bến Nghé River, near a bustling dock utilized by both military and civilians for entering and exiting Gia Định (Quy Thành, the Eight-Trigram Fortress), hence the name Bến Thành. After the Lê Văn Khôi uprising (1833-1835), the Gia Định fortress was demolished, and the market fell into disuse. Following the French assault on Saigon in February 1859, the market was completely burnt down. In 1860, the French rebuilt Bến Thành Market at its original site. Through a series of extensive restorations, the market was gradually enhanced, adorned with robust brick columns, sturdy iron beams, and elegant tiled roofs, reclaiming its grandeur and historical significance.

In the dawn of the 20th century, between 1912 and 1914, the French undertook a significant reconstruction of Bến Thành Market at its current site, notably introducing a symbolic clock at the southern entrance. Situated before this main gateway, the bustling Bến Thành Market roundabout unfolds, also recognized as Diên Hồng Park and Quách Thị Trang Square. During this era, the city's focus was less on aesthetic embellishments and more on the fundamental functionalities of the market. As a result, emphasis was placed on practical aspects such as high, airy ceilings to enhance ventilation, stone-paved floors for durability, and an efficient sewage system to meet the daily demands of a busy marketplace.

Having stood sentinel over the historic shifts of this city for more than a century, Bến Thành Market has woven itself into the fabric of Saigon's community, reflecting both the grandeur of the past and the dynamic pulse of contemporary life.

Covering over 13,000 square meters, it thrives as a vibrant center of commerce, where nearly 6,000 vendors across about 1,500 stalls draw thousands of visitors daily from the local area and beyond.

The market is designed with four main entrances and 12 auxiliary ones, each positioned on different streets and tailored to specific product categories. This segmentation not only facilitates the search for diverse goods but also enhances the rich and spirited atmosphere of the marketplace.

Bến Thành Market stands as one of the few enduring architectural relics of Saigon, a true emblem of its rich cultural tapestry. It frequently graces films and articles, earning a spot as a top destination in nearly every travel guide about the city. For many locals, it serves as the quintessential introduction to Saigon, often the first place they mention when describing their hometown.
