24-01-2023

(worldkings.org) In December 2021, Asa Coast Railway started on Saturday the world's first commercial operation of a dual mode vehicle (DMV) capable of running on both roads and railway tracks. On January 24th, 2023, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Osaka University as “world's first company to operate Dual-mode Vehicle (DMV) for railway tracks and roads”.

Based on the world record nomination from Asia Records Institute (ASRI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/956/2023/No.412, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially Asa Coast Railway as world's first company to operate Dual-mode Vehicle (DMV) for railway tracks and roads on January 24th, 2023.

Asa Seaside Railway (nicknamed “Asatetsu”) is a semi-private 3rd sector railway company in the island of Shikoku’s Tokushima Prefecture. The company runs just one line called the Asato Line which runs between Kaifu Station in the town of Kaiyo and Kannoura Station in the town of Toyo.

Together with JR Shikoku's Mugi Line, it has the official nickname Awa Muroto Seaside Line. Because this is a rural area and is thinly populated, the railway has been struggling to do business and has been under the threat of closure for some time.

In December 2021, Asa Coast Railway started on Saturday the world's first commercial operation of a dual mode vehicle (DMV) capable of running on both roads and railway tracks. The vehicles, 3 heavily-modified Toyota Coasters, are the first in the world, will allow through service to areas without rail track laid. In preparation, the rail line was disconnected from the Mugi Line since summer 2019.

This one-of-a-kind vehicle only takes 15 seconds to switch between train and bus mode, and definitely causes gasps of surprise when you see it running along on the coast-side train tracks.

Weekday services run from Awa-Kainan Station to Kannoura Station before turning around and traveling down to Shishikui Onsen Roadside Station. The journey is 15 kilometers long and takes around 35 minutes to complete.
