[WORLDKINGS] The Constant World Records Seeking Journey (P.73) - Veryovkina cave: The deepest-known cave on Earth

10-12-2020

(Worldkings.org) Veryovkina had only recently been named the world’s deepest cave. During an expedition in March 2018, Demidov and his comrades had reached a terminal sump at the water table—a depth of 7,257 feet (2,212 meters). The low point was a new record, knocking the neighboring Krubera cave, at 7,208 feet (2,197 meters), into second place.

Based on the world record nomination from Asia Records Institute (ASRI) and Decision WK/USA.INDIA/627/2020/No.83, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Veryovkina cave as the deepest-known cave on Earth on December 10th, 2020.

Veryovkina Cave is 2,212 meters (7,257 ft) deep and is the deepest-known cave on Earth. Its entrance is situated 2,309 meters (7,575 ft) above sea level in Abkhazia, Georgia.

The entrance of the cave has a cross section of 3m × 4m (9.8ft × 13.1ft), and is located in the Arabika Massif, Gagra Mountain Range of the West Caucasus, on the pass between the Krepost and Zont mountains. The depth of the entrance shaft is 32 meters (105 ft). In 1968, the cave was assigned the name S-115 which was later replaced by P1-7, and in 1986 it was renamed after Alexander Veryovkin.
