[WORLDKINGS] The Constant World Records Seeking Journey (P.294) Gennaris (Australia): World's first Bionic Eye System

17-05-2022

(worldkings.org) Gennaris operates by allowing messages to be delivered from the retina to the brain’s vision center by bypassing damaged optic nerves. On May 17th, 2022, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Driven By Intuition as “world's first bionic eye system”.

Based on the world record nomination from Australia Records Institute (AURI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/848/2022/No.304, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially Driven By Intuition as world's first bionic eye system on May 17th, 2022.

Scientists from all over the world have been working to develop a treatment for blindness. However, various bionic technologies have been discovered but they have not been able to assist blind people on a massive scale.

The Monash University team claims to have developed a method that will allow blind people to see again. They claim that this is the world’s first bionic eye. The ‘Gennaris bionic vision system,’ a prosthetic eye, has been in development for nearly a decade. It operates by allowing messages to be delivered from the retina to the brain’s vision center by bypassing damaged optic nerves.

The user would have to put on a specially constructed helmet with a camera and a wireless transmitter. The signals from the aforementioned receiver are received by a set of 9 mm tiles implanted in the brain.

The camera captures the scene and sends it to the vision processor, which is as big as a smartphone and the scene is processed to get the necessary information. Next, the processed information passes to complex circuitry within the implanted tile, through the wireless transmitter. "This will convert the data into a pattern of electrical pulses, which will stimulate the brain via hair-thin microelectrodes," it was explained by the university.
