[WORLDKINGS] The Constant World Records Seeking Journey (P.134) Tibetan Plateau – World's largest and highest plateau

(Worldkings.org) The Tibetan Plateau, also known in China as the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau or the Qing–Zang Plateau or Himalayan Plateau, is a vast elevated plateau in Central Asia and the world. With an average altitude of over 4,500 meters above sea level, covering most of the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai in western China, as well as Ladakh and Lahaul & Spiti (Himachal Pradesh) in India.

Based on the world record nomination from Asia Records Institute (ASRI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/688/2021/No.144, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Tibetan Plateau as the World's largest and highest plateau on May 01, 2021.

It stretches approximately 1,000 kilometres north to south and 2,500 kilometres east to west. It is often referred to as "the Roof of the World" or the world's highest and largest plateau above sea level, with an area of 2,500,000 square kilometres (about 4 times larger than the size of Texas or France).

The plateau ‘s formation is a result of a continental collision or orogeny along the convergent boundary between the Indo-Australian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, about 50 million years ago, and this process is still ongoing. The Tibetan Plateau contains the headwaters of the drainage basins of most of the streams in surrounding regions.

Its tens of thousands of glaciers and other geographical and ecological features serve as a "water tower" storing water and maintaining flow. It is sometimes termed the Third Pole because its ice fields contain the largest reserve of fresh water outside the polar regions.

The area covers an area of 83,000 square kilometers at an average height of 4,800 meters above sea level, stretching east-west between the Tang Coh and Kunlun mountains in the Tibetan border area, Qinghai province and northwestern Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China.
