19-03-2026

(worldkings.org) Arnesen accomplished this feat in 1994 when she completed a solo expedition across Antarctica to the geographic South Pole. On 19 March, 2026, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Liv Arnesen as the “first woman in the world to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole”.

Based on the world record nomination from the Europe Records Institute (EURI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/1430/2026/No.885, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared the Liv Arnesen as the first woman in the world to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole.

Liv Arnesen is a Norwegian polar explorer, educator, and author who made history as the first woman in the world to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole. Her expedition became a landmark achievement in the history of polar exploration and helped expand the role of women in extreme adventure and scientific exploration.

During the journey, she skied approximately 1,200 kilometers (about 745 miles) across the Antarctic ice sheet while pulling a heavy sled containing food, equipment, and survival gear. “Unsupported” means she received no external assistance, no resupply drops, and no mechanical transport during the entire journey.

The expedition took about 50 days, during which Arnesen faced extreme Antarctic conditions, including temperatures well below freezing, powerful winds, and vast crevasse fields hidden beneath the snow. She navigated alone through one of the most remote and dangerous environments on Earth, relying on her training, endurance, and careful planning to reach the pole safely.

After completing this historic journey, Liv Arnesen became widely recognized for her contributions to exploration and environmental education. She later co-founded the organization Explorers Club Norway initiatives promoting polar research and climate awareness, and she has participated in several other expeditions, including long polar crossings with American explorer Ann Bancroft. Her 1994 expedition remains a milestone in the history of human exploration of Antarctica.
