13-11-2025

(worldkings.org) The Sybil Elgar School was founded in 1965 by the National Autistic Society (NAS), with Sybil Elgar, the first special-education teacher for those with autism in the United Kingdom, as its first principal. It was the world's first school specifically for autistic children. On November 13, 2025, the World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Sybil Elgar School as the world’s first autism-specialist residential school.

Based on the world record nomination from the Europe Records Institute (EURI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/1389/2025/No.843, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Sybil Elgar school as the world’s first autism-specialist residential school.

The Sybil Elgar School was started in 1962; a group of parents with autistic children set up what would go on to become the National Autistic Society. They begin our fight for autistic people's rights. During that period, the diagnosis of childhood schizophrenia often led to the institutionalization of autistic children, as there was no provision for them.

In 1965, the National Autistic Society founding group of parents asked teacher Sybil Elgar to set up a school for their children in West London. It is the world's first school specifically for autistic children.

Starting with just nine pupils in one building, the school now has the capacity to accommodate up to 72 students as day or weekly boarders, aged 11 to over 19.

From the beginning, the purpose of the school is to help prepare young people to make a successful transition into adulthood with the confidence and the necessary skills to live as independently as possible and participate in their local community.
