[WORLDKINGS-PART 2] Top 500 Immutable World Records (P.831) Tottori Sand Museum (Japan): The World's first permanent indoor museum dedicated to sand art

08-11-2025

(worldkings.org) Tottori Sand Museum was originally established in 2006 as a temporary outdoor exhibition, but due to its popularity, a permanent indoor facility opened in April 2012. On November 08, 2025, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared Tottori Sand Museum as "the world's first permanent indoor museum space dedicated to sand art”.

Based on the world record nomination from the Asia Records Institute (ASRI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/1387/2025/No.841, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared RAIM as the first permanent indoor museum space dedicated to sand art.

The Tottori Sand Museum in Tottori City, Japan, holds the distinction of being the world’s first permanent indoor museum dedicated to sand art. Located near the iconic Tottori Sand Dunes, the museum showcases large-scale sand sculptures created entirely from sand and water, without the use of adhesives or coloring. It was originally established in 2006 as a temporary outdoor exhibition, but due to its popularity, a permanent indoor facility opened in April 2012. The museum’s concept, “Travel around the World in Sand,” invites visitors to explore global cultures through intricate sand sculptures that change annually.

 Tottori Sand Museum

Each year, the museum selects a new theme based on a different country or region, and sand sculptors from around the world gather to bring that theme to life. These masterpieces can reach several meters in height and width, featuring astonishing detail and realism. However, one of the most striking aspects of the museum is the temporary nature of its art—after each exhibition season, the sculptures are dismantled and returned to sand, symbolizing the impermanence of beauty.

The Tottori Sand Museum is also notable for its connection to the surrounding landscape. Overlooking the vast Tottori Sand Dunes, it blends art, nature, and cultural storytelling in a way that few museums can. Visitors often pair their museum trip with a walk through the dunes, enjoying an immersive sand-themed experience. Through this innovative combination of artistry and environment, the Tottori Sand Museum not only celebrates human creativity but also reminds us of the delicate balance between art and nature.
