Based on the world record nomination from Asia Records Institute (ASRI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/1381/2025/No.835, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared the Hainan Ocean Data Center as the world's first commercial underwater data center.
The Hainan Ocean Data Center, deployed off the coast of Lingshui, Hainan Province, China, is the world's first commercial underwater intelligent computing center. This groundbreaking facility represents a major leap towards sustainable digital infrastructure. Its core innovation is leveraging the ocean's natural low-temperature environment to cool its servers, completely eliminating the need for complex, energy-intensive cooling systems and the large volumes of freshwater used by traditional, land-based data centers.

This submerged facility offers immense efficiency gains. By utilizing the cold seawater, it achieves a superior Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of about 1.1, making it over 30% more energy-efficient than conventional data centers and achieving zero freshwater consumption. The current cluster is powerful, capable of delivering a processing capacity equivalent to about 30,000 high-end gaming PCs, enabling it to handle over 7,000 simultaneous AI queries per second.
The project aligns with China's goals for carbon neutrality and blue economy development. It minimizes land usage and is designed to integrate with clean energy sources like offshore wind power. By proving the commercial viability of an underwater intelligent computing cluster, the Hainan Ocean Data Center offers a promising blueprint for future data storage and high-performance computing globally.
