[RECORD NOMINATION] America Records Institute (AMRI) – P7. Oliver Crane (United States) : The youngest American rows solo across the Atlantic.

(WorldKings.org) Oliver Crane is the youngest American rows solo across the Atlantic when he was 19 years old in 2017.

Oliver Crane became the youngest American to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean , when he arrived on the Caribbean island of Antigua to a crowd of cheering friends and family. Crane completed his 3,000-mile voyage in 44 days after starting in the Canary Islands on December 14, 2017. The voyage was part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, an annual transatlantic race that bills itself as "The World's Toughest Row."

"It was hard starting out from La Gomera, off the coast of Africa, taking that first stroke and knowing I had close to a million more strokes to go and 3,000 miles left," Crane told ABC News. "But I got through it, and I'm glad to have."

"I ate mainly junk food," he said. "I was supposed to eat freeze-dried food as my main energy source, but I had a hard time getting it down, so I lived off of Pringles and candy for a long time."

Crane's 23-foot, custom-built boat, nicknamed "Team Homeward Bound", has a solar-powered water maker and is designed to right itself if it capsizes, which happened a number of times along the way. There's no toilet on board - Crane had to use a bucket.

In the process, Crane lost 25 pounds and dropped to 4 percent body fat. But he raised more than $60,000 for Oceana, the international advocacy organization focused on ocean conservation. He also raised money for HomeFront, a local charity that helps the homeless.
