(AMRI) Journey to promote Records in Americas - P23 - Lake Nicaragua (Nicaragua): The only freshwater lake containing sharks in Americas

(worldkings.org) Lake Nicaragua is the only freshwater lake containing oceanic animal life, including sharks, swordfish, and tarpon.

Lake Nicaragua, the largest of several freshwater lakes in southwestern Nicaragua and the dominant physical feature of the country. It is also the largest lake in Central America.

Oval in shape, with an area of 3,149 square miles (8,157 square km), the lake is 110 miles (177 km) in length and has an average width of 36 miles (58 km). It is about 60 feet (18 metres) deep in the centre, and its waters reach a depth of 200 feet (60 metres) to the southeast of its largest island, Ometepe. The lake’s surface is 95 feet (29 metres) above sea level.

Lake Nicaragua is the only freshwater lake that contains several oceanic animal species. This is likely due to the fact that the lake was once an ocean bay, until it was separated by a volcanic eruption, trapping fish in the lake basin where they had to adapt to the water progressively losing its salinity.

About 40 species of fish like tarpon, big sawfish, fine-toothed sawfish, gasper, and swordfish along with 16 species of cichlids are found in the lake. Freshwater shark species like the Caribbean bull shark are also found in the lake waters.
