(AMRI) Journey to promote Records in Americas - P18 - Mundial de Tango (Argentina): The largest tango tournament in the Americas

07-02-2024

(worldkings.org) Mundial de Tango is hailed as the world’s largest tango-related festival with 2,000 performers and nearly half a million visitors.

The World tango dance tournament (in Spanish: Campeonato Mundial de Baile de Tango, also known as Mundial de Tango) is an annual competition of Argentine Tango, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, usually in August, as part of the Buenos Aires Tango Festival organized by the city's government. The first edition of the Mundial de Tango competition was held in 2003.

The competition consists of two categories: "Tango de Pista" (Salon Tango), which has strict rules about the usage of traditional milonga figures, and "Tango Escenario" (Stage Tango), which is more choreographic and includes elements from other dance disciplines, such as ballet.

In 2023, as the event celebrates its 20th year, over 1,000 artists took part in the competition at 30 venues. A total of 590 couples will compete – a record-breaking number—as well as special presentations.
