WORLDKINGS - Worldkings News - Europe Records Institute (EURI) – Orca: World's largest carbon-capture plant

20-09-2021

(Worldkings.org) Orca has the capacity to remove 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere this way each year.

The Orca plant is located in Hellisheidi, Iceland, adjacent to Icelandic energy company ON Power's geothermal power plant, and is entirely run on this renewable energy.

The construction of Orca single-handedly increases Earth's annual carbon capture capacity by 40 percent to 13,000 metric tons, reports Corbin Hiar of E&E News, but that is a small fraction of what will be needed to significantly reverse humanity's carbon emissions.

Around 31.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide were emitted in 2020, reports Nikolaj Skydsgaard of Reuters. Orca will be able to capture the equivalent of the annual emissions made by 790 cars.

Orca has the capacity to remove 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere this way each year.

The number equates roughly the emissions from 870 cars or 9,281 consumed barrels of oil, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency greenhouse gas calculator.
