The volcano was formed by the complex interaction between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. It is a massive stratovolcano with a base covering around 1,190 square kilometers and a circumference of roughly 140 kilometers. At its summit are several active craters, while more than 300 secondary vents and fissures are scattered across its slopes, allowing lava to erupt from different locations during periods of volcanic activity.

Unlike many volcanoes that remain dormant for decades or centuries, Mount Etna is almost constantly active. It experiences numerous eruptions each year, ranging from mild lava flows to spectacular lava fountains and towering ash plumes. Although most eruptions are not catastrophic, they can disrupt air travel, damage infrastructure, and affect nearby communities. As a result, the volcano is closely monitored by volcanologists, making it one of the best-studied volcanic systems on Earth.
Despite the risks, Etna has also brought significant benefits to the surrounding region. Volcanic ash has created exceptionally fertile soils that support vineyards, olive groves, citrus orchards, and chestnut forests, making the slopes of Etna one of Italy's most productive agricultural areas. The volcano is also a major tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year who come to explore its lava fields, summit craters, and dramatic volcanic landscapes via cable cars, off-road vehicles, and guided hiking tours.
Recognizing its outstanding geological significance, Mount Etna was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. Today, it stands not only as one of Italy's most iconic natural landmarks but also as a vital natural laboratory for studying volcanology, plate tectonics, and volcanic hazard mitigation, providing valuable insights into the dynamic forces that continue to shape our planet.
