(EURI) Journey to promote records in Europe (P.502) Mercado Central de Pescados: The largest wholesale fish market in Europe

30-07-2026

(Worldkings.org) Mercado Central de Pescados, located within the vast Mercamadrid wholesale food complex in Madrid, Spain, is widely recognized as the largest wholesale seafood market in Europe.

Despite Madrid being situated approximately 300 kilometres from the coast, the market has become Europe's leading seafood distribution hub thanks to Spain's highly efficient transport and cold-chain logistics network. Every day, fresh fish and seafood arrive from the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, Northern Europe, Africa, and South America before being distributed to supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, and traditional markets throughout Spain and beyond.

Opened in 1982 alongside the Mercamadrid complex, Mercado Central de Pescados occupies around 33,000 square metres of covered market space and accommodates 156 wholesale stalls. Its facilities include a 650-metre unloading dock, more than 60,000 square metres of loading and parking areas, two ice plants capable of producing around 20 tonnes of ice per day, and refrigerated storage with a capacity of approximately 2,000 cubic metres. This advanced infrastructure ensures that seafood remains under strict temperature control from arrival to final distribution, preserving freshness and quality.

The market handled 149,540 tonnes of seafood in 2024, maintaining its position as Europe's largest seafood wholesale market by trading volume. According to Mercamadrid, it is also regarded as the second-largest seafood market in the world after Tokyo in terms of commercial activity and is considered the world's leading market for the diversity of seafood species traded. Hundreds of varieties of fish, shellfish, molluscs, and frozen seafood products are available, sourced from both Spanish fisheries and international suppliers.

Business at Mercado Central de Pescados begins long before sunrise. From midnight until the early morning hours, thousands of professional buyers—including retailers, supermarket chains, hotels, and food-service operators—conduct transactions before products are dispatched across the country. This rapid overnight operation enables seafood caught only hours earlier to reach consumers the same day, making the market a vital link in Spain's food supply chain.

More than just a wholesale marketplace, Mercado Central de Pescados represents the strength of Spain's modern food logistics industry. Combining immense trading capacity, state-of-the-art refrigeration technology, and an extensive distribution network, it has earned its reputation as the largest seafood market in Europe and remains one of the world's most important centres for seafood commerce.
