The dune stretches for approximately 2.7 km along the Atlantic coast and measures 500–600 m in width. Its height varies from year to year due to the effects of wind and tides, but it generally ranges between 100 and 106 m, with the highest recorded elevation reaching 110.9 m in 2017. The dune contains an estimated 55–60 million cubic meters of sand, forming a massive natural barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and the vast Landes pine forest.

One of the most fascinating characteristics of Dune of Pilat is that it is constantly moving. Driven by strong coastal winds, the dune gradually migrates inland at an average rate of 1–5 m per year, slowly advancing over the surrounding pine forest and continuously reshaping the landscape. This dynamic process makes it an important site for the study of coastal geomorphology and the natural evolution of sand dunes.

From the summit, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the Bay of Arcachon, Cap Ferret, the Atlantic coastline, and the endless expanse of pine forest. The striking contrast between golden sand, deep blue ocean, and lush green woodland creates one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in France. Thanks to its unique geological significance and breathtaking scenery, Dune of Pilat attracts around 2 million visitors annually, making it one of France's most visited natural landmarks.
