(EURI) Journey to promote records in Europe (P.498) Europa-Rosarium: The largest rose garden and collection in Europe

16-07-2026

(Worldkings.org) Covering approximately 13 hectares (32 acres), Europa-Rosarium features more than 8,600 rose species and cultivars, representing centuries of rose breeding and botanical diversity.

Located in the town of Sangerhausen in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, Europa-Rosarium is recognized as the largest rose garden in Europe and home to the world’s most extensive collection of rose species and cultivars. Established in 1903 by the Association of German Rose Friends (Verein Deutscher Rosenfreunde), the garden has grown into an internationally renowned center for horticultural research, conservation, and the preservation of historic roses. Today, it is one of Germany’s most celebrated botanical attractions and a must-visit destination for rose enthusiasts from around the world.

The garden is home to around 80,000 rose plants, including the world’s largest collection of wild roses, alongside many rare and historic varieties such as green roses, moss roses, and oil-bearing roses. Complementing the rose displays are approximately 300 species of trees and shrubs, creating a rich and diverse landscape that enhances both the ecological and aesthetic value of the site.

One of the garden’s highlights is its remarkable collection of approximately 850 climbing rose varieties, trained over pergolas, pillars, and ornamental towers. During the peak blooming season, typically from June to early July, millions of blossoms transform the entire garden into a vibrant sea of color and fragrance. This spectacular display attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, including horticulturists, researchers, photographers, and tourists. Beyond its visual appeal, Europa-Rosarium also serves as Germany’s national gene bank for roses, safeguarding endangered and historic cultivars while supporting scientific research and the development of new rose varieties.

In 1993, the garden officially adopted the name Europa-Rosarium, reflecting its status as Europe’s premier rose collection. A decade later, in 2003, it received the prestigious Award of Garden Excellence from the World Federation of Rose Societies, recognizing its outstanding contribution to the conservation, cultivation, and promotion of roses worldwide. Combining exceptional botanical diversity, historical significance, and scientific importance, Europa-Rosarium stands as not only Europe’s largest rose garden but also one of the most important specialized rose gardens on the planet, preserving a living heritage of one of the world’s most beloved flowers.
