The first edition featured around 80 dogs competing in 14 classes, limited to Pointer and Setter breeds. By the Society's second show later that year, participation had expanded to 267 entries across 42 classes. By the end of the 1860s, the event had grown into one of Britain's premier canine exhibitions, attracting more than 700 dogs and approximately 20,000 spectators, reflecting the rapidly rising popularity of pedigree dog shows across the country.

The Birmingham Dog Show Society also played a pivotal role in the development of the modern dog-showing world. Several members of its original organizing committee became founding members of The Kennel Club in 1873, helping establish standardized rules for pedigree breeding, conformation judging, and championship competitions. As a result, the show is widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of organized dog exhibitions and purebred canine standards.

Today, the Birmingham Dog Show Society Championship Show remains one of the 37 Championship Dog Shows licensed by The Kennel Club in the United Kingdom. Success at the event enables qualified dogs to compete at Crufts, the world's largest and most prestigious dog show. One notable modern edition, held at the Staffordshire County Showground from 5–8 May 2016, welcomed more than 10,000 dogs representing over 200 breeds during its four-day program, demonstrating the enduring significance of this historic competition within the international dog-show community.
