The Fanø International Kite Fliers Meeting is the largest kite festival in Europe and one of the world's premier gatherings for kite enthusiasts. Held annually on the expansive sandy beaches of Fanø Island, off Denmark's west coast, the festival was first established in 1985 by German kite enthusiast Wolfgang Schimmelpfennig. What began as a small meeting of hobbyists has grown into a globally recognized event celebrating the art, engineering, and culture of kite flying.

Every year in mid-June, the festival attracts approximately 5,000 kite flyers from 26 countries, who collectively bring around 25,000 kites to the island. The skies above Fanø become a spectacular canvas filled with giant inflatable dragons, octopuses, whales, geometric creations, and traditional handcrafted kites. Rather than being a competition, the event focuses on cultural exchange, artistic expression, and demonstrations of kite-making and flying techniques, making it a unique gathering for both professionals and families.

One of the festival's defining features is its open and community-oriented atmosphere. Admission is free, allowing visitors to interact directly with kite designers, participate in workshops, and experience large-scale synchronized flying displays. Fanø's natural landscape with its 15-kilometre-long, wide, flat beach and consistent North Sea winds, provides ideal conditions for flying everything from delicate single-line kites to enormous inflatable structures spanning dozens of metres.
