(EURI) Journey to promote records in Europe (P.487) The Hoppings: Europe's largest travelling funfair

20-06-2026

(Worldkings.org) The event is widely promoted as Europe's largest travelling funfair because of its immense scale. In a typical year, The Hoppings features more than 400 rides, attractions, and stalls spread across approximately 28 to 30 acres (11–12 hectares) of the Town Moor. The fairground extends for over one kilometre, creating a temporary entertainment complex that rivals many permanent amusement parks in size and variety.

The Hoppings is a historic travelling funfair held annually on the Town Moor in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Founded in 1882, it has grown from a local fair into one of the most prominent travelling amusement events in Europe. Unlike a permanent theme park, The Hoppings is assembled each year by travelling showmen who transport rides, games, food stalls, and attractions to the site for a limited period, typically lasting around ten days in June.

Its popularity is reflected in its attendance figures. The Hoppings regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors during its run, with annual attendance often estimated between 300,000 and 500,000 people. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of attractions, from traditional carousels and family rides to large-scale thrill rides, giant Ferris wheels, funhouses, and classic fairground games.
